NELSON MANDELA – A TRUE EXAMPLE OF A SERVANT LEADER (1)

NELSON MANDELA – A TRUE EXAMPLE OF A SERVANT LEADER (1)

DWOJ Daily Words of Jesus Devotional Post December

Monday, 12th December, 2016.

Bible reading: Luke 9:23-25.

Memory Verse: From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Matthew 16:21(NKJV)

Many people talk about servant leadership but few business, religious, social, and political leaders actually consistently make it over the top. Too often leaders do not allow themselves to get beyond human selfishness, ego, or bitterness.

Mandela lived for 27 years in prison, mostly on Robben Island, where every day with a small hammer he broke rocks apart in the blazing sun only to retreat into his only home, an 8’ by 8’ cell.

Mandela helped to unite South Africa as it dismantled apartheid – the cruel system of racism employed by the white minority who ruled the vast black population. He symbolized for all of Africa a commitment to democracy and freedom.

Despite the personal cost, he stayed true to his conviction that South Africa should be a democracy with one-person, one-vote equality for all of its citizens.

When the South African government freed Mr. Mandela, I was amazed at how he could move beyond the personal pain he suffered, the years of bondage, the separation from his family to serve his country. Some predicted when he assumed power that he would usher in an age of violence and retribution on the ruling class for the wrongs of the apartheid system. They were wrong. He loved his country.
