Bible Reading: Isaiah 49:15a

Memory VerseAs one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort youIsaiah 66:13a (ESV)

Anna Jarvis, the daughter of a peace activist who treated wounded soldiers in the American Civil War, campaigned for a day to honour the role played by mothers. She observed the second Sunday in May, as that was when she held a service to honour her mother when she died. The idea gained such traction that, by 1911, all US states took on the holiday.

It was declared a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, who officially stated it should be held in May. Eventually, this tradition reached the UK, and Mothering Sunday became more popularly known as Mother’s Day. The UK and Nigeria date of this celebration is rooted in the Christian observance of Lent, with Mothering Sunday taking place on the fourth Sunday, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday.

A mother is one treasure every child should value. I remember the poem, “My Mother” by Ann Taylor. One verse says, “Who sat and watched my infant head, When sleeping in my cradle bed, And tears of sweet affection shed? My Mother.” I particularly love this verse, “When sleep forsook my open eye, Who was it sung sweet hushaby, And rock’d me that I should not cry? My Mother.”

A mother is your first friend, your best friend, your forever friend. A Mother is the heartbeat in the home; and without her, there seems to be no heartthrob. The influence of a mother in the lives of her children is beyond calculation. Motherhood is the exquisite inconvenience of being another person’s everything. A mother understands what a child does not say.

However, because we are in a wicked world, there are mothers who have sold their souls to the devil and have vowed that their children shall not prosper. At other times, there are mothers who have vowed that their only child will not get married so as to give them undivided attention. This is an operation of the spirit of witchcraft. I bring the judgement of God upon such spirits and set such children free in Jesus name.

Furthermore, there are mothers who have cursed their children with their two breasts perhaps when they provoked them to anger or betrayed their love and trust. May the Lord have mercy. As a child, if you know you are under a curse pronounced by your mother, make sure you find a way of reversing such curse on a day like this.

Wrap up a beautiful gift your mother love and ask for her blessings that you may live long and it may be well with you in the land the Lord your God has given you. Don’t joke with spiritual authority. Together as a family at DWOJ devotional, we say, Happy Mother’s Day.
