Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 10:5, 1 Peter 3:15
Memory Verse: We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV)
An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.” The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?” “Oh, I don’t know,” said the atheist. “How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?” “Okay,” she said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?” The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says: “Hmmm, I have no idea.” The little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you can’t answer a simple question?” And then she went back to reading her book. The Bible in Proverbs 26:5 (ESV) says, “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.”
In the same vein, 2 Timothy 2:23 (NIV) says, “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments because you know they produce quarrels.” C.S. Lewis was one of the most prominent atheists of his time. In the early hours of 21st September, 86 years ago, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien were debating the coherence of Christianity in one of the foundational moments that led Lewis to become a Christian. Lewis, an Oxford professor and author, went on to become one of the great bastions of 20th century Christianity against a growing tide of atheist philosophy. He went on to write and lecture in defence of faith which include:
- Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and, if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important.
- To be ignorant and simple now – not to be able to meet the enemies on their own ground – would be to throw down our weapons and to betray our uneducated brethren who have, under God, no defense but us against the intellectual attacks of the heathen. Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered.
3. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.
4. I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
Like C. S. Lewis and the Saul of Tarsus, may the Lord encounter many a atheist in Jesus name.
Quote: Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God” – Psalm 14:1 (NLT)
