Bible Reading:  Psalm 119:11, Colossians 3:16

Memory Verse:  These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Deuteronomy 6:6 (CSB)

Bible Memorization simply means “storing the scripture in your mind.” It is committing God’s word to memory so that it can be recalled and put to use.

Why Must You Memorise the Scriptures?

1. MEMORISED VERSES HELP YOU FIGHT SIN: David said he hid Scripture in his heart to keep himself from sin (Psalm 119:11). Jesus fought the devil’s traps with God’s Word (Matthew 4). Paul labels Scripture as “the sword of the Spirit,” making it the only offensive weapon in the armour of God. When temptation comes your way—temptation to worry, lie, lust, or covet—the verses you’ve memorized will help you prevail.

2. MEMORISED VERSES HELP YOU MEDITATE THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Scripture memorisation helps you meditate on the scripture while cooking, cleaning, mowing, walking, or cleaning, etc. A closed Bible doesn’t mean closed access to Scripture. When you tuck God’s Word into your mind, you give yourself the opportunity to meditate on Scripture wherever you are and whatever you’re doing.

3. MEMORISED VERSES HELP YOU ENCOURAGE OTHERS: What do you say when someone tells you about a difficult trial or challenging decision they’re facing? Do you rely on your own insight and wisdom to address the situation? Or do you turn to the storehouse of verses you’ve memorized, in order to share a comforting word from Scripture?

4. MEMORISED VERSES HELP YOU PRAY: Whether in private or before others, praying is something many of us do on a normal basis. Imagine being able to pray Scripture-informed prayers at the dinner table or before bed, because you’ve hidden God’s Word in your heart. Praying the Scriptures is one of the surest ways of getting answers to prayers.

5. MEMORISED VERSES HELP YOU FACE FUTURE TRIALS: “Bible study,” like “Bible memorization,” is an investment with a long-term payoff. Rather than reading a specific text to try to meet an immediate need, give the benefits of your study [or memorization] permission to be stored away for future use. The verses you memorize today will help you face the challenges you face tomorrow.

QuoteBy memorising the promises of the Bible and accepting them in faith, we are hiding them in our hearts that we might not sin against God (Psalm 119:11) – Dr D.K. Olukoya.

Prophetic Decree: Receive grace to be quickened by the Word in season and out of season, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. Thank you Father for this great treasure called the Bible.

2. O Lord, please remember the labours of our Fathers who hazarded their lives to see the Bible in print, and help us to commit our time to see the truth in your word, in Jesus name.

3. O Lord, let your Word continue to flow to regions that are yet to receive it, in Jesus name.

4. Grace for quick understanding and retention of the Word, fall upon me, in Jesus name.

5. May your Word continue to dwell in my life and that of my family from one generation to another, in Jesus name.
