Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8

Memory VerseNow when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayedActs 13:36 (NIV)

Even if you can’t sing the hymn, I will want you to meditate upon the words of the hymn, “Must I go, and empty-handed?” on page 103. The words of the hymn was written by Charles Carroll Luther in 1877. In 1877, he heard Rev. A.G. Upham relate the story of a young man who was about to die. He’d only been a Christian for a month, and sorrowed because he had so little time to serve the Lord. He said, “I am not afraid to die; Jesus saves me now. But must I go empty handed?” The young man that prompted the words of this hymn had only one month to live after he got born again. That means in the calendar of God, he only lived for one month.

He wondered if he will meet his Creator empty handed. He must have thought to himself upon his death bed: What did I do with my life? What sacrifice did I make for God’s kingdom? How many souls did I deliver from the shackles of hell? etc. Year 2021 is moving steadily but surely, what are you going to do for God this year? When will you get your mind off your problems, challenges and situation and sow a seed into eternity? We are all here but for a moment. One day, we shall all give account of our lives before the judgement seat of God. Are you sure you will receive crown? What about that book the Holy Spirit has been prompting you to write for the edification of the body of Christ? When will you absolutely surrender to the will of God over your life? Will you keep struggling to meet ends meet knowing fully well that there is a higher calling over your life? Give it up to God.

How many souls have you brought to Christ this year? Many don’t know that they can evangelize the world by simply sending a devotional like this to all their phone contacts, and social media handles dutifully everyday of their lives. Furthermore, the Lord can also use you to open the doors of nations to the gospel by free distribution of this type of work of grace. Sit down with the Holy Ghost and ask him what He will have you do. Meanwhile, while you must not meet your Saviour empty handed, you must also not meet your Saviour without fulfilling your purpose optimally. Like David in our memory verse, Lord, help us not to meet you empty handed, having fulfilled all your counsel for our generation. Amen.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:    Judges 19-21

Hymnal: Must I go, and empty-handed

1. “Must I go, and empty-handed,”

Thus my dear Redeemer meet?

Not one day of service give Him,

Lay no trophy at His feet?

Chorus

“Must I go, and empty-handed?”

Must I meet my Savior so?

Not one soul with which to greet Him:

Must I empty-handed go?

2. Not at death I shrink nor falter,

For my Savior saves me now;

But to meet Him empty-handed,

Thought of that now clouds my brow.

3. O the years in sinning wasted;

Could I but recall them now,

I would give them to my Savior,

To His will I’d gladly bow.

4. O ye saints, arouse, be earnest,

Up and work while yet ’tis day;

Ere the night of death o’ertake thee, Strive for souls while still you may.
