Bible Reading:  Isaiah 43: 18-19

Memory Verse: ..But one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13b

James A. Garfield, the 20th American President was shot by Charles J. Guitean in Washington D.C, at 9:30am on Saturday, July 2, 1881, less than four months after he took office. The two bullets entered his body through his back and his life was saved through the intervention of several medical experts. But to the surprise of the surgeons that carried out a series of surgeries on him, one of the bullets that went through his back was not found and all efforts to trace it proved abortive. After several medical efforts, the President was doing very fine and doctors advised him to forget about the missing bullet, since they couldn’t locate it.

The President insisted that they should make further effort to trace and retrieve the missing bullet from his body. Further medical examinations and surgeries were carried out on him, yet the missing bullet was nowhere to be found. Still he was not comfortable despite doctors’ advice to let it go. Due to his insistence to trace the missing bullet, an American scientist and inventor of telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, was contacted who later developed an electronic device to look through his body in order to locate the missing bullet. Bell determined that a properly configured induction balance would emit a tone when a metal object was brought into proximity with it.

At the end of July, he began searching for Garfield’s missing bullet, but unfortunately, no bullet was found in his body after several searches. President James A. Garfield died on the 19th of September, 1881, at about 10:35pm. Further examinations confirmed that no bullet was left in his body. Autopsy result showed that his death was not from gunshot wounds or the missing bullet but from infections caused by the chemical and electronic reactions from machines used in the search of the missing bullet in his body. President Garfield wouldn’t have died if he had conceded and followed the advice of the doctor to let the missing bullet be. It has been scientifically proven that such a metal could stay in the human body for over 100 years without causing any complications.

Sometimes, it is better to leave things alone. Don’t always try to find solutions to every problem by force or by any means. Many things that happen to us as human beings are mysteries which we may never be able to unravel no matter how much we try. “Some of us think holding on makes us stronger, but sometimes it is letting go” – Herman Hesse.
