Bible Reading: Psalm 136: 1-26
Memory Verse: Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever. Psalm 136:1 (NKJV)
We shall forever be grateful to God for the completion of another quarter. But for His mercies, we could have been consumed. You can’t work with God strictly by following your emotions because your emotions will not always be in alignment. Similarly, when you take a ‘quick swipe’ at your life, you may not always see a reason to thank God.
Perhaps some of your earnest expectations haven’t come to pass. Perhaps you are struggling with your health. Perhaps you haven’t paid some bills. Perhaps you are not where you think you should be. Perhaps life seems a bit too difficult. Perhaps you haven’t gotten your settlement visas despite your many prayer requests. Perhaps your dream job seems elusive. Perhaps you’re battling with some mysterious battles. Perhaps… and perhaps… Friends, never forget: Only the living has expectations.
‘My mates have gone ahead of me’. That’s fine! There are some of your mates that are behind you as well. There are some of your mates also in the grave. Why are you so hard on yourself and so bitter against God as well?
Thanking God is a command and not an emotional request. Psalm 67:5-6 (NKJV) says, “Let the people praise You, O God; Let all the people praise You. Then the earth shall yield her increase; God, our own God, shall bless us.” Giving thanks to God is the secret to your increase. Appreciation is qualification for multiplication. The shortest cut to abundance is thanksgiving.
Only those who think deep praise Him. Despite your challenges, if you can be sincere with yourself, God has been faithful! Remember all the near misses. Remember all the ‘quarter-to-shame’ experiences. And then, Jehovah stepped in and averted your shame. Praise Jesus!
Friends, do you know that thanksgiving does not only multiply what is in your hands? It also ventilates your mind. Take a day off your worries. Get a pen and paper. Then, begin to itemise the so-called ‘little blessings’ such as sleeping and waking, going to work and coming back safely, ability to think correctly, ability to walk, ability to write, etc. Suddenly, your cloudy mind encumbered with worries, earnest expectations, and prayer concerns gives way to gratitude. Your problems become lighter. A garment of praise replaces the spirit of heaviness.
Should God open your eyes, you will be amazed by the myriad of spiritual battles He fought and won for you without you lifting a finger. But for His mercies, you could have been consumed! (Lamentations 3:22).
