Bible Reading: 2 Peter 2:19, 1 Corinthians 10:23
Memory Verse: You are a slave to whatever controls you. 2 Peter 2:19 (NLT)
A digital prison is not made of bars and walls. It is made of screens, apps, likes, and endless scrolls. It is a subtle but powerful confinement of the mind, soul, and time, where people, especially teenagers and youths, are held captive by the very tools designed to connect and entertain them. While technology itself is not evil, when misused or unbalanced, it becomes a deadly trap.
How does digital prison affect you?
1. The Walls of the Prison: Addiction to Screens: A 15-year-old checks her phone over 200 times a day. She wakes up with her phone and goes to sleep with it. Her mood swings with the number of likes or comments she gets. She feels anxious when she’s away from her phone for more than 10 minutes. Her grades drop, sleep becomes irregular, and self-esteem plummets. This is not fiction. It is reality for millions of teens globally. “Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial. I will not be mastered by anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12 (NIV). Many youths have unknowingly become digital slaves; always online, but internally offline. The screen becomes the master; God takes the backseat.
2. Social Media: The Mirror of Comparison. A young man constantly sees highlight reels of other people’s lives e.g. vacations, luxury, relationships, and success. He starts to feel inadequate and depressed, thinking, “Everyone is doing better than me.” He doesn’t know that much of what he sees is curated or fake. Social media amplifies envy, anxiety, and self-doubt, turning God’s image-bearers into insecure scrollers. Romans 12:2 (NIV) says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This digital comparison kills contentment. The more teens compare themselves to filtered lives, the more they despise their real life.
Assignment: Watch the film “The Big Reasons” from the staples of Evom Channel Tv written by Jesutomisin Agboola.
Quote: Most 21st century prisons are not made of bars and walls; they are made of screens, apps, likes, and endless scrolls. Be warned!
Prophetic Decree: Receive the mighty inner strength of the Holy Spirit to rule over the social media.
Prayer Focus
Thank you Father for your love and grace. I receive discernment of the times and seasons. I receive wisdom to regulate screen time and to prioritise my destiny. I receive grace to say no to indiscriminate use of my phone, the social media, games and entertainment. Help me to see myself in the light of your Word, and not in the mirror of comparison with my peers on the social media, in Jesus name. I receive grace never to see the successes of others as an hindrance to mine, in Jesus name.
