Bible Reading:  Psalm 38:33, Psalm 111:10, Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Memory VerseThe fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understandingProverbs 9:10 (NIV)

I read the testimony of a man who was very vibrant for God working in signs and wonders. Suddenly, the news of his sexual escapades and fraudulent lifestyle broke out. Eventually, he was sent to jail for 5 years. There, he encountered God afresh. He got to speak with another minister while in the prison who asked him a very sincere question, “Sir, what really went wrong?” He answered him in all honesty, “Though I love God sincerely, sometimes shedding tears when I am worshipping but, I never feared Him.” The fear of God was the missing link!

The Bible describes the fear of God as the beginning of wisdom. To fear God is to reverence Him most dearly in your heart; not wanting to do anything that may hurt Him. The fear of God refers to a deep reverence and awe for God’s power and holiness, leading to wisdom and a life of obedience. This fear is not a debilitating fear of punishment, but rather a respect that shapes one’s decisions and actions, ultimately leading to a close relationship with God. To fear God is to depart from evil. 2 Timothy 2:19b (ESV) says “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
