Bible Reading: Ephesians 5: 21-29, Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12
Memory Verse: Let all that you do be done in love.1 Corinthians 16:14 (ESV)
Daddy Kolade Segun-Okeowo (KSO) and Mummy Sumbo Segun-Okeowo (SSO) are Christian veteran actor and actress respectively who shared their thoughts on marriage having been married for over 25 years. Below are the four rules that have kept their marriage strong:
1. Acceptance: They have learnt to take each other for who they are. Daddy KSO could be argumentative and tenacious while pursing a project; he shuts down his mind to any other thing. Mummy SSO has learnt to take care of those little details often neglected especially when it affects family health. Take your partner for who he/she is.
2. Understanding: This talks primarily of your family background, and also your academic background. Many of our behaviours are a function of where we are coming from. When you dare to understand the circumstances surrounding the way your spouse was brought up, you will see reasons why the person behaves the way he/she does. Couples who are academically far apart will most likely think differently. KSO was already a Masters degree holder when SSO was just about entering tertiary institution when their relationship started. KSO’s father always demanded accountability of all money spent no matter how small while SSO parents gave her a freehand on money matters.
3. Management: Don’t try to always correct or change everything about your spouse especially after much fruitless corrections. It will only result in the disppearance of peace from the home. Rather, you must learn to manage your spouse’s weaknesses. KSO had a room to himself while staying with his parents and could throw his clothes anywhere while SSO stayed in a well-arranged room with her mother.
4. Celebration: Daddy KSO said he will never forget the day his wife came all out to welcome him after he had lost an election. That was a red lettered day, he recalled. Be a succour to your spouse. Celebrate each other even in little things. When all hope fails be sure your spouse will be there for you.
Quote: A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences – DaveMeurer.
