Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:24, Ecclesiastes 4:9

Memory Verse:  As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)

The story of William Wilberforce and John Newton is more than a historical partnership. It is a profound example of how God uses relationships for Kingdom purposes. Wilberforce, a rising politician in 18th century England, was deeply moved by the gospel and considered leaving politics altogether to pursue a religious life. But God, in His sovereignty, placed John Newton, a former slave trader turned Christian pastor (and author of Amazing Grace), in Wilberforce’s path. Newton, now fully committed to Christ, had repented of his dark past and was passionate about ending the slave trade. When Wilberforce sought his counsel about whether to leave Parliament, Newton urged him to stay and serve God through politics, declaring: “It is hoped and believed that the Lord has raised you up for the good of the nation.”

Spiritual Lesson 1God uses people to confirm our calling: Wilberforce’s decision to remain in politics was heavily influenced by Newton’s wisdom and mentorship. Sometimes we need the voice of a godly friend to help us discern God’s will. “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed” — Proverbs 15:22. Ask yourself: Who is helping me hear God’s voice more clearly?

Spiritual Lesson 2Redemption Makes You a Vessel of Purpose: John Newton, once a slave ship captain, repented and spent the rest of his life fighting against the very evil he once profited from. His story of transformation was a living testimony of God’s mercy, which strengthened Wilberforce’s conviction to abolish slavery. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17. God doesn’t waste your past. He can redeem it to bring freedom to others!

Spiritual Lesson 3True Friendships are Rooted in Christ and Purpose: Newton and Wilberforce’s relationship wasn’t based on casual affinity; it was rooted in mutual love for Christ and a shared mission. Through letters, prayers, and encouragement, Newton stood by Wilberforce during setbacks and opposition. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Ecclesiastes 4: 9-10.

Reflection: Take a moment to reflect: Am I surrounding myself with people who sharpen my faith? Who has God placed in my life to guide, mentor, or walk with me in purpose? How can I, like Newton, use my story to strengthen others?

Quote: God often calls us to our destiny through the wisdom and influence of others.

Prophetic Decree: Any wall of Jericho between you and your destiny relationship is pulled down in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

Lord, thank You for the gift of godly friendships and divine connections. Help me to value the wisdom of others, walk in my calling, and be a source of encouragement to those around me. Use my life and my past for Your glory. Like Wilberforce and Newton, may I partner with others for the advancement of Your Kingdom, in Jesus name. Amen.
