Bible Reading: John 1: 19-23
Memory Verse: Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John 1:22 (NIV)
John the Baptist faced a very critical question of identity in our Bible reading for today. He was asked to define who he was. Thanks to God, he wasn’t found wanting. Dear brethren, should you be asked, “Who are you?”, what are you going to say? Have you identified your purpose? What are you sent to do on planet earth? Many are just moving about with no inner conviction of the reason for their birth. Why did God form you in your mother’s womb? What problems are you here on earth to solve? Your job, many atimes, is not your assignment. There is a kingdom problem God has destined you to solve. Until then, you are barely existing and not living.
‘Who are you?’ is a question of purpose. Your purpose is your divine assignment on earth. Your purpose is the true reason for your creation. Your purpose is the reason why God brought you to the earth. Your job could give you some money and provide a platform for the purpose of serving your purpose but it is not your purpose in itself.
The destiny of a clay is not its decision but that of the Potter. The direction of an aeroplane is not its decision but that of a pilot. The bearing of a ship is not its decision but that of the captain. Similarly, every human being was created by God for a purpose, and that purpose is not our decision but the decision of God who created us. “Who You Are” is not your decision, rather it is your discovery. Hence, you must allow the light of God to help you discover what He has created you to be.
Many will wake at the end of their lives only to ask, “What really have I done with my life?” Yes, you may have the cars, the houses, the money, the connection, etc, but what have you really being doing with your life to the glory of God and benefit of mankind according to the volume of books that have been written concerning you? What a pity to discover that you have only chased shadows after over four to six decades on earth. The night will soon come when no man can work anymore (John 9:4b). Today, make up your mind to run with God’s purpose for your life.
Quote: If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live – Martin Luther King Jr.
