Bible Reading: Proverbs 13:20, Hebrews 13:7
Memory Verse: As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)
Mentorship is a helping relationship where one person, usually with more experience, takes time to assist the career, professional, spiritual, or personal development of another. The primary goal of mentorship is to facilitate the mentee’s growth, development, and success by providing guidance, advice, and support. The mentor acts as a guide, advisor, and role model, sharing their knowledge and experience to help the mentee achieve their goals.
The mentee is the person receiving guidance and support, actively seeking to learn and grow from the mentorship relationship. Mentorship can help mentees develop skills, gain knowledge, increase confidence, and advance their careers. Mentors can enhance their leadership skills, gain a broader perspective, and contribute to the growth of others.
Yes, I agree that there have been certain abuses in some quarters where some mentors became overbearing and ‘tormentors’ over their mentees. Nevertheless, this is the biblical way by which God raise men and women of stature in life, career, profession, and ministry. You will always be an offshoot of something or someone. You are not wired to work alone. Yes, I agree that there are virgin dimensions in God and paths never charted, still, you will need the input of men at certain junctions to navigate that route successfully.
Mentorship is one way by which God curb our excesses, prune us, humble us, ease our journey through the school of life, and make us dependent even in our independence. Else, we may not see any good in fellow humans. You will make less mistakes and travel farther if you would subject yourself to the discipline and tutelage of a mentor.
