Bible Reading: Genesis 2:18–25; Colossians 3:12–14

Memory VerseCan two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3

In Part 1, we looked at becoming the right person. In this second part, we will focus on discernment, alignment, and practical readiness, because preparation is not complete until you learn how to recognise and sustain what God gives.

7. Value Spiritual Compatibility Over Everything: Attraction can bring people together, but only shared faith and values can keep them together. A godly marriage is built on agreement in Christ, not just shared interests. It’s not enough that someone is “nice” or “hardworking.” Ask: Do they genuinely love God? Do they pursue Him personally? If one person is spiritually on fire and the other is lukewarm, conflict is inevitable.

8. Learn Communication Before Marriage: Many marriages struggle not because of lack of love, but lack of understanding. Colossians 3:13 teaches us to bear with one another and forgive. Practice honest and respectful communication in your current relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Learn to listen, not just respond. If you avoid difficult conversations now, you will struggle in marriage.

9. Deal with Past Baggage: Unhealed wounds can sabotage a good relationship. Pain from past relationships, childhood experiences, or disappointments must be addressed. If you have trust issues because of past betrayal, don’t carry that into a new relationship. Pray, seek counsel, and allow God to heal you. A healthy marriage requires a healed heart.

10. Be Financially and Emotionally Responsible: Love is powerful, but marriage also requires stability and wisdom in daily living. You don’t need to be rich, but you should be responsible. Learn budgeting, saving, and contentment. Also, grow emotionally. Don’t depend on another person to complete you; come whole.

11. Don’t Ignore Red Flags: God often shows warning signs early, but many people ignore them because of emotions. If someone consistently lies, disrespects you, or lacks self-control, don’t assume marriage will change them. What you tolerate in dating will multiply in marriage.

12. Embrace God’s Timing: One of the greatest keys to a successful marriage is timing. Rushing can lead to regret, while waiting builds strength and clarity. Seeing others get married can create pressure, but remember: delay is not denial. Trust God’s process. It is better to wait and marry right than to rush and marry wrong.

QuoteRight timing with the wrong person is still wrong; but God’s timing with the right person brings peace.

Prophetic Decree: Receive divine discernment to recognise the right partner and fortitude to sustain your marriage, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. Father, give me wisdom to discern the right suitor from the wrong one, in Jesus name.

2. I receive strength to walk away from what is not for me, and patience to wait for God’s perfect timing.

3. Holy Spirit, prepare me fully for the marriage You have ordained, in Jesus name.

4. I reject haste and impatience. I will not marry out of societal pressure or pressure due to advancement in age, in Jesus name.

5. I receive grace to identify supposed suitors who are wolves in sheep clothing, in Jesus name.
