Confirmation bias is the tendency to only look for, believe, and remember information that supports what you already think, while ignoring or dismissing opposing evidence. It is a mental shortcut that reinforces existing beliefs and stereotypes, often leading to biased decisions, poor judgment, and one-sided views.
Confirmation bias is simple but dangerous: you believe something, then you only notice things that support that belief, while ignoring anything that challenges it.
Real-Life Examples
1. Someone gets cheated in one relationship and concludes: “All men/women are the same.”
2. A student fails one Maths test and says: “I’m just not good at Maths.” (even though they’ve passed before)
3. A person grows up hearing: “Rich people are wicked,” so they subconsciously avoid opportunities that could make them prosper.
In each case, the mind becomes a filter, and not a mirror.
Biblical Insight: When Prophet Samuel saw Eliab, he thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed.” But God corrected him: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7). Samuel almost missed David because of bias. In the same way, confirmation bias can make you miss relationships, miss opportunities, and even miss God’s direction.
It shows that:
I. One bad experience is not a universal truth.
II. God can hide your blessing inside what you once rejected.
III. Many people today are delaying their destiny because they are living from past conclusions instead of present truth.
Way Out: To overcome confirmation bias:
A. Question your assumptions: “Is this really true, or just my experience?”
B. Look for opposite evidence: Intentionally notice what contradicts your belief.
C. Invite God’s perspective: Don’t let pain define your worldview
Quote: Your experiences are real, but they are not always the truth about everything.
Prophetic Decree: I break you free from every limiting belief formed from past pain, in Jesus name.
Prayer Focus
1. Lord, open my eyes to see people, situations, and opportunities the way You see them, in Jesus name.
2. Lord, heal every mindset shaped by hurt, fear, or wrong conclusions, in Jesus name.
3. Lord, help me walk in truth, not bias, so I do not miss my destiny, in Jesus name.
4. I receive clarity of mind and purity of perception, in Jesus name.
5. I will not miss divine opportunities because of wrong assumptions, in Jesus name.
6. I receive my deliverance from limiting belief system by the power in Blood of Jesus.
