Bible Reading: Romans 12:2
Memory Verse: Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits. 1 Corinthians 15:33
The environment we grow up often shapes the way we think, speak, treat others, and even treat ourselves. Many people are fighting battles today that were silently planted by the environment around them years ago.
A child who grows up in a home where shouting, insults, and curses are normal may unconsciously carry those habits into adulthood. Even after moving to a beautiful neighborhood or gaining success, the old wiring remains. If there is no physical street to fight on, social media becomes the street. The environment may change, but the mindset remains the same.
The Bible shows us this truth in the life of the Israelites. Though they left Egypt physically, Egypt did not immediately leave them mentally. Every challenge made them want to return to slavery because that was the environment that had trained their thinking (Numbers 14:1-4).
Many people were raised in homes where love was rarely expressed, encouragement was absent, and criticism was abundant. As a result, they struggle to value themselves. They save the best plates for visitors, the best clothes for special occasions, and the best treatment for others while neglecting themselves. Deep inside, they may feel they are not important enough.
Yet the Bible teaches something different. You are God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). God does not treat you as worthless, so you should not treat yourself that way either.
Consider the story of Mephibosheth. Because of his painful past, he saw himself as a “dead dog” (2 Samuel 9:8). But King David saw him differently and gave him a permanent seat at the king’s table. Many believers still see themselves through the lens of their painful environment rather than through the eyes of God.
A person who constantly hears, “You will never amount to anything,” may grow up expecting failure. Another who is repeatedly shown love and respect often develops confidence and healthy relationships. The words and atmosphere around us leave fingerprints on our souls.
The good news is that Christ can rewire what the world wired wrongly.
When Zacchaeus encountered Jesus, his mindset changed. When the woman with the issue of blood encountered Jesus, her identity changed. When Peter encountered Jesus, his future changed. God specializes in breaking unhealthy patterns and creating new ones.
Do not allow your upbringing to become your destiny. Your past may explain you, but it does not have to define you.
Quote: Your environment shapes you more than you know.
Prophetic Decree: I command every evil deposit from your environment to come out of you, in Jesus name.
Prayer Focus
Father, open my eyes to every unhealthy pattern I have carried from my environment. Heal every wound that has distorted the view of myself and others. Renew my mind through Your Word. Teach me to value people as You value them and to see myself through Your eyes. Let my home become an environment of love, honour, peace, and godliness, in Jesus name. Amen.
