Bible Reading:  Genesis 41: 34-36

Memory VerseWealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. Proverbs 13:11 (ESV)

His Father was an accountant in a big reputable organization in Nigeria. His father was very wealthy. His father has three children, two girls and one boy. The boy was 11years when he first travelled abroad. His father used to take his  family abroad on vacation every year and spent a lot of millions just for them to catch fun and enjoy life. The second year when the father was preparing them for another vacation to travel overseas, the boy at the age of 12 years told his father that he won’t go with them. Why son? The dad asked. “I don’t feel like going dad”, the son responded. “Dad, how much will it cost for my vacation?” N1.4million ($2,500), his dad answered. “Dad, I am not going, open an account for me and put the money there.” “Why?”, Dad asked. Well Dad, when I grow up, am still going to be travelling abroad as much as I want, so, why going every year when I can still go by myself in future when I have saved more than enough for myself? The son protested. “Fine”, said his dad.

The third year, the boy refused to go. His money was credited into his account. The forth year, the same story. The 5th year, the same story and his father said, I can’t fix N1.4million in your account this time. The boy told his father, please let’s negotiate, how much will you afford? 500,000 naira ($1,000), his father thundered. “Dad!!! Please, give me #750,000 please, he pleaded.” Agreed! His Dad nodded off. After 14 years that his family had been travelling abroad, a problem arose in his father’s office which made his father went bankrupt. His father was in desperate need of 5 million naira ($8,800) to solve the problem and secure his seat. Even his wife could not help. She was a wife who spent everything on anything.

The two daughters were spoilt brats who could eat anything eatable with any resources available with them. The father became depressed and frustrated, then, the boy walked up to him. “Dad, what’s the matter?” He narrated everything to him, and the boy said, “Dad, give me your account details”. By then, the boy’s account balance was up to 11.6 million naira ($20,350). The boy made a transfer of 7 million ($12,300) into his father’s bank account. The father almost fainted. “He who buys what he does not need, steals from himself” – Swedish Proverb.

Lesson: Take it or leave it. If you eat all you have, then you don’t have a future. Think savings. More importantly, think investment. Invest in profitable start up business, invest in landed properties, etc. Parents, hope you’re practising delayed gratification even as you teach your children to do likewise, including how to save their time and money?
