Bible Reading: Ephesians 4:23
Memory Verse: We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)
In 1903, Harry Andrews, a British Coach, set a new record in athletics: 4 minutes, 12.75 seconds in the mile run. Harry Andrews declared: “the record for the mile of 4 minutes, 12.75 seconds in athletics will never be surpassed.” The “experts” felt that running the mile under four minutes was humanly “impossible.” Physicians (science) agreed with this statement, and it was impossible to overcome that feat. All emerging athletes literally endorsed this belief in their minds.
The human body wouldn’t support such an effort and heart. It would literally explode. All these claims were in the minds of athletes and great runners who, for more than 50 years attempted to “take risks” and break that record. Some were close, but no one could run a mile under four minutes for more than five decades! In the early 50’s, a young British announced that he would run the mile under 4 minutes. It was a piece of shocking news for everyone who at least tried to break the record for once, and they couldn’t believe it.
In 1954, 6th May, Roger Bannister became the first person to break Andrews’s record at the age of 25, in 3:59.4 min. He proved that there is nothing impossible. It’s not enough, just after 10 years, Year 1964 to be precise, America’s Jim Ryun became the first high school runner to break four minutes for the mile, running 3:59.0 as a junior and a then American record 3:55.3 as a senior in 1965.
Harry Andrews, who has been considered as the greatest coach of the world used to claim that breaking his record is next to impossible for a human body and even science has agreed with the statement. It’s quite evident for the rest of the people to think that it’s true. Anything is indeed not impossible until it’s done. Once, the most significant statement has been proved wrong, there are more than 1400 athletes who have broken this record so far.
As at Year 1999, the 4 minute-mile record stands at 3:43.13, by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco, at age 24.
