Bible Reading: Haggai 1:6

Memory Verse: And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground…” Malachi 3:11

A devourer is anything that continuously consumes, wastes, destroys, or diminishes what God has given you. While many people pray for blessings, few pray against devourers. Yet there is little value in pouring water into a basket full of holes.

The Israelites experienced this in the days of the prophet Haggai. They worked hard, but their results disappeared mysteriously.

“Ye have sown much, and bring in little… and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.” (Haggai 1:6). The Midianites in the days of Gideon is another good example of a devourer. They showed forth only at the time of harvest carting away all the farm produce of the Israelites (Judges 6). What a wasted effort.

Many believers today face similar battles. They earn money but never seem to have enough. They make progress only to encounter setbacks. They receive opportunities but lose them through carelessness, bad habits, sickness, or spiritual attacks.

God does not only bless His children; He also promised to rebuke the devourer.

Other Common Devourers include:

1. The Devourer of Sin: Sin can consume destiny, peace, and fellowship with God. Achan’s hidden sin brought defeat upon Israel (Joshua 7). A promising student who becomes addicted to pornography or drugs will gradually lose focus, opportunities, and spiritual sensitivity.

2. The Devourer of Sickness: Long-term illness can consume finances, strength, joy, and productivity. The woman with the issue of blood spent all her money on physicians for twelve years (Mark 5:25-26). A family spends thousands on medical bills because of a health issue that could have been prevented through proper care and timely treatment.

3. The Devourer of Laziness: Laziness quietly eats away potential. The sluggard in Proverbs was warned that poverty would come upon him like an armed robber (Proverbs 6:9-11). Don’t spend hours daily on social media but never develop the skills needed for your career growth.

4. The Devourer of Bad Relationships: Wrong associations can destroy years of progress. Amnon listened to Jonadab’s evil counsel and ruined his life (2 Samuel 13). A young entrepreneur could get involved with dishonest friends and lose his reputation and business.

5. The Devourer of Fear and Unbelief: Fear can consume opportunities before they even begin. The ten spies saw giants and discouraged Israel from entering their inheritance (Numbers 13). Some people have refused to apply for a promotion, start a business, or pursue a God-given dream because of fear of failure.

Quote: A devourer is anything that continuously consumes, wastes, destroys, or diminishes what God has given you.

Prophetic Decree: Today, the mouth of the Lord that spills fire shall consume any devourer in your life, in Jesus name.
