Topic: DON’T ALWAYS DEFEND YOURSELF
Bible Reading: Hebrews 12:6
Memory Verse: To accept correction is wise, to reject it is stupid. Proverbs 12:1 (CEV)
Growth demands honesty. And honesty is impossible when you are always in survival mode, always explaining, always protecting your image. When every correction feels like rejection, the heart closes instead of learning. But Scripture reminds us that the Lord disciplines those He loves, not to shame them, but to shape them. If we cannot receive loving correction from people, how will we receive refinement from God?
Defensiveness is often a trauma response. Psychologically, it is the ego’s attempt to protect itself from perceived danger. Spiritually, it can also be pride wearing armour. Pride does not always look loud and arrogant. Sometimes it looks like constant justification. It looks like “you don’t understand me” before asking, “Lord, what are you trying to show me?”
The Word says that wisdom rests on the humble, and that a wise person loves correction. That does not mean accepting abuse or tolerating dishonour. It means having the maturity to pause before reacting. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to search your heart before you defend your behaviour. David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” That is the posture of someone who wants transformation more than validation.
Reflection is uncomfortable because it confronts the parts of us that still need healing. But reflection is also holy. It is the doorway to renewal, because repentance begins with awareness.
When we humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand, He lifts us. When we resist correction, we resist growth. When we embrace humility, we invite evolution. Marriages are restored, wounds are healed, and destinies are unlocked when a person chooses humility over ego.
As a believer, I know this is not just emotional maturity, it is spiritual maturity. The fruit of the Spirit includes gentleness and self-control, not constant self-defence. You cannot grow if you are constantly defending yourself. But you will flourish when you allow God to refine you. Humility is not weakness. It is strength surrendered to God for transformation.
Quote: You cannot grow if you constantly defend yourself.
