Bible Reading:  Exodus 1: 15 – 22

Memory Verse:  Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee, which thou hast wrought for them that put their trust in thee, before the sons of men! Psalm 31:19 (ESV)

There is a popular local adage that says, “If you send a son an errand meant for servants, the onus lies with the son to deliver such an errand as a true son indeed”. This is the best description of what happened between the Hebrew midwives and Pharaoh when Pharaoh instructed them to kill the children of the Israelites just after birth. The Bible says, “But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive” Exodus 1:17 (KJV). They dared the mighty king of Egypt at the expense of their lives and stood for righteousness. We are to obey those in authority (Romans 13: 1-3). Yes we are.

However, should they err against the standards of God, we must stand for righteousness in wisdom. Why should you gain the approval of man and lose the approval of God even if man decides to persecute you? Get ready to stand for your faith and to suffer for it if need be. Know for sure that your light afflictions are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed. (Romans 8:18). Will you fear God when your boss tells you to pad the contract as the Accounting Officer? Will you fear God as a teacher when your principal tells you to teach the students examination questions which she has secretly bought? Will you fear God when you are given guns to kill people outside your faith? Will you fear God when given money to make purchases by returning the balance? Just like the Hebrew midwives, no one truly fears God without being rewarded both in this world and in eternity.

You can’t fear God and kill your fellow human being for any reason whatsoever. You can’t fear God and backstab your fellow friends. You can’t say you fear God and convert your best friend’s husband to your own husband. You can’t say you fear God and get involved in any form of examination malpractices. Parents, you can’t say you fear God and enroll your children in special examination centres. God is well able to make your child pass his exams without any strings attached. You can’t say you fear God and destroy government or school properties willfully. You can’t say you fear God and convert public funds for personal use.
