Bible Reading: Luke 9:24, Revelation 2:10
Memory Verse: Little children, we must stop expressing love merely by our words and manner of speech; we must love also in action and in truth. 1 John 3:18 (ISV)
Passion for God has never been loud emotion alone; it has always been deep love expressed through obedience, surrender, and pursuit. The fathers of faith understood this well. Their lives preached before their lips ever spoke.
1. Augustine of Hippo: He said, “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Augustine teaches that passion for God begins with holy dissatisfaction. A heart truly on fire for God cannot be satisfied with pleasure, success, or religion alone. Restlessness is not rebellion. It is the soul remembering its true home.
Measure of passion: Do you feel empty without God’s presence? Is your heart restless when prayer is absent?
2. John Chrysostom: He said, “Nothing is colder than a Christian who is unconcerned about the salvation of others.” Chrysostom teaches us that passion for God is never self-centered. If you truly burn for God, you will burn for what burns His heart— the souls of men.
Measure of passion: Do you care about others knowing Christ? Has love replaced indifference?
3. Origen of Alexandria: He said, “The soul that loves God cannot remain without prayer.” Origen teaches us that prayer is not a discipline first; it is a consequence of love. When passion grows cold, prayer becomes forced. When passion is alive, prayer becomes necessary.
Measure of passion: Is prayer your refuge or your routine? Do you run to God instinctively?
4. Tertullian: He said, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” Tertullian teaches that passion for God is proven by what we are willing to lose. The early believers loved God more than comfort, reputation, or even life itself.
Measure of passion: What price are you willing to pay for obedience? Does inconvenience stop your devotion?
5. Ignatius of Antioch: He said, “Let fire and cross, flocks of wild beasts… come upon me, only let me attain to Jesus Christ.” Ignatius teaches that true passion for God is single-focused. When Christ becomes the ultimate pursuit, fear loses its voice.
Measure of passion: Is Christ your supreme desire? Can suffering distract you from loving Him?
6. Bernard of Clairvaux: He said, “The measure of loving God is to love Him without measure.” Bernard teaches that you cannot calculate devotion to an infinite God. Passion for God grows where love is extravagant, not economical.
Measure of passion: Are you giving God leftovers or first love? Is your devotion increasing or plateauing?
Quote: To know God and to give your entirety to Him should be your greatest passion.
Prophetic Decree: I break every passion of lust, world, sin, and self-centredness blocking the full expression of your love for God, in Jesus name.
