Bible Reading:  Isaiah 14: 12-15

Memory Verse: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6

Proverbs 16:18 (HCSB) says, “Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.” 1. As we can see in our Bible reading, Lucifer, who later became the devil, was thrown out of heaven because of pride (Isaiah 14:12-13).

2. When the devil realised that pride leads to destruction, he made it one of his deadliest weapons. He deceived Adam and Eve telling them that when they eat the forbidden fruit they would be wise like God (Gen. 3:6). Adam and Eve fell. The glory of the Lord that covered them departed and they realised they were naked and exposed. Pride disgraces its hosts beyond measure.

3. The story of Pharoah is another case study. It was pride that caused him and his army to drown into the Red Sea. One would expect that after experiencing the ten terrible plagues God sent against him and his people, Pharoah would humble himself before the Most High, instead, he remained stubborn, asking “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go”? (Exodus 5:2). By the time he realised that the Lord is the Almighty, it was too late for him to repent.

4. It is pride that will make you walk out on your parents when they are correcting you. Young person, you are heading for destruction if you don’t repent.

5. It is pride that will make you look and talk disrespectfully to your Pastor. Hear me: The devil has definitely made up his mind to “use you to destroy you.”

6. It is pride that will make you value human connection and special centres above sitting down and preparing hard for your examinations (Psalm 147: 10).

7. Pride turned a king who lived in a palace into an animal who lived in the forest for seven years. Ask king Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4: 24-27).

Way out:  To escape the spirit of pride, you need to be genuinely born again, sanctified with the Word of Truth, and totally submit to leadership of the Holy Spirit.
