Bible Reading: Philippians 2: 1-4

Memory Verse: Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Philippians 2:3 (NLT)

Every problem ever caused by man is rooted in selfishness. To be selfish is to seek one’s own pleasure. It is to be overly concerned about “I, me, and myself”. It is the bedrock of all corruption. It may surprise you that people commit suicide because they are selfish. Should they think about their loved ones and the pain they will cause them, they would have had a rethink. Selfishness is the primary cause of all vices in our world. It short-circuits our prayers. He who lives for himself does not have much to live for. Selfishness seeks its own pleasure, its own well-being, or its own advantage without recourse to others. Every sin has its root in selfishness.
How do you know if you are selfish?

  1. When you’re insensitive to the needs of the people around you.
  2. When you get angry when things don’t go your way.
  3. When you have unreasonable expectations from people.
  4. When you want 100% compliance at all times from people.
  5. When you are manipulative.
  6. When you’re unwilling to identify with the feelings of others.
  7. When you’re arrogant and proud.
  8. When you always talk only about yourself.
  9. When you’re envious of others.
  10. When you try to avoid your responsibilities.
  11. When you are lazy and proud.
  12. When you blame others for your short comings.
  13. When you prefer to receive than to give.
  14. When you always want to be at the centre of attraction.
  15. When you practice substance abuse.
  16. When you eat excessively.
  17. When you’re obsessed with your physical appearance.
  18. When you’re always blaming others; you’re ever controlling.
  19. When you’re not willing to extend appreciation to others.
  20. When you’re lazy and refusing to accept responsibilities in major areas of your life.
  21. When you react to criticism with strong anger.
Quote: If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears – Cesare Pavese
Prophetic Decree: Let the altar of self-centeredness crumble in your heart, in Jesus name.
