Bible Reading: Genesis 49:1-7

Memory Verse: Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Corinthians 2: 11

There is a well-known trap used by hunters to catch monkeys. What do they do? They cut a hole inside a coconut big enough for the open hand of the monkey to fit in, but the fist cannot. Before then, bait in form of a fruit is kept inside the coconut to lure the monkey in. Then, the coconut is tied to a tree. What they found out is that monkeys are greedy. The monkey sticks its little hand inside the coconut to try to pull the fruit out but cannot get it out! And when the hunter approaches, it tries even harder to try to pull the fruit out. But it cannot do it, and then, the monkey gets captured. All the monkey had to do was to open his hand to let go of the fruit and its hand would have easily slicked out of the trap but it would not. It is blinded by greed. Its attachment to the fruit is so strong that it sacrifices his life for it. Silly monkeys, right?

Mmmmm… maybe not. What is your own coconut? What are you holding on to that easily traps you? If you would let go, you would be free. Could it be money? Could it be your sinful friend? if only you let go, then you would truly experience happiness. Could it be anger, bitterness or resentment? If you forgave that person and let go of your judgement, then, you would be free. Or maybe you have an idea in your mind of what your perfect partner looks, acts, smells like, and that is trapping you. And if you could just let go of the idea, then you would be free to see what might be right under your nose. No matter what the attachment is….Is it not time to let go? Do not sacrifice your happiness, your peace, your life for man’s version of a coconut.
