Bible Reading: Ephesians 5: 21-33

Every marriage is shaped by a governing template, whether consciously or unconsciously. Broadly speaking, there are three dominant marriage models operating in society today: 1. Cultural Marriage. 2. Contemporary Marriage. 3. Kingdom Marriage.

Each model is driven by a different set of values, expectations, and principles, producing very different outcomes.

The critical question is not whether you are married, but which template is defining your marriage. What kind of marriage are you building? Today, let’s talk about Contemporary Marriage.

2. CONTEMPORARY MARRIAGE: Contemporary marriage is built primarily on modern societal values. Its emphasis is usually independence, self-fulfilment, personal rights, and individual freedom.

While contemporary marriage rightly rejects oppression and abuse, it often swings to the opposite extreme by promoting self-centeredness.

The focus becomes: “What makes me happy?” “What benefits me?” “What are my rights?” The challenge is that two independent people fighting for personal rights rarely build lasting unity.

Take for instance Samson and Delilah. Though not a marriage covenant in the strict sense, their relationship reflects many contemporary values such as personal desires, attraction, self-interest, and individual agendas dominated the relationship. Neither was committed to serving the purpose of God together. The result was betrayal and destruction. Relationships built solely around personal fulfilment eventually collapse when sacrifice becomes necessary.

In modern times, many couples enter marriage with a silent agreement such as:

I. “As long as you make me happy, I will stay.”

II. “As long as those physical qualities such as beauty and material qualities such as wealth remains, then we can continue in marriage.”

III. “For better for stay, for worse for go”.

There are many dating programmes in this day that will eventually end up in a crash because they are not built on biblical principles.

But marriage was never designed to be sustained by feelings alone. When hardship comes, many people begin calculating what they are receiving rather than what they are giving. The result is disappointment, conflict, and sometimes separation.

Independence without covenant eventually weakens intimacy.

Prophetic Decree: The plague of modernisation fighting your marriage shall not prosper, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. Holy Spirit, deconstruct my mind from the shadow of contemporary marriage, in Jesus name.

2. Holy Spirit, please shield my marriage from abuse and oppression even as you teach me wisdom for mutual fulfilment, in Jesus name.

3. I come against every altar fighting against my marriage internally and externally, in Jesus name.

4. I break every contemporary limiting mindset working against my home, in Jesus name.

5. I come against every power saying No to the Yes of God in my marriage, in Jesus name.
