WHY PEOPLE TRY TO JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS

WHY PEOPLE TRY TO JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS

Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:12, Philippians 2:5

Memory Verse:  Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility]. Philippians 2:5 (AMP)

There are days you shouldn’t talk. Silence could be golden, but not all the time. That aside, some people are just too defensive. They can never accept they are wrong or sit down to chat through a difficult conversation. In Genesis 3, when confronted, Adam justified himself by blaming Eve. Eve justified herself by blaming the serpent. Self-defence began in Eden as an attempt to escape responsibility.

Here are the core reasons why people try to justify their action:

1. To Protect Their Self-Image: Most people want to see themselves as good, right, or reasonable. When actions clash with that image, justification acts as a shield: “I had no choice.” “Anyone would have done the same.” Admitting fault can feel like admitting, “I am bad,” instead of “I made a mistake.”

2. To Reduce Inner Conflict (Cognitive Dissonance): When beliefs and actions don’t align, the mind becomes uncomfortable. Rather than change the action, many people change the story they tell themselves. “It wasn’t wrong because…” Self-defence restores emotional peace without real repentance or growth.

3. Fear of Consequences: Owning an action may lead to: loss of respect, accountability, correction or discipline. Self-justification becomes a way to escape consequences while appearing reasonable.

4. Pride and Ego: Pride resists humility. Self-justification says, “I may be wrong, but I won’t bow”. This is why arguments often escalate because people defend their ego, not their actions.

5. Unhealed Insecurity: As taught by Apostle Iren, “Whatever you rise to defend is often a pointer to a hidden insecurity.” People justify most fiercely where they feel exposed.

6. Lack of Emotional Awareness: Many people were never taught to: Sit with discomfort, accept correction, and separate identity from behaviour. So, self-justification becomes a default emotional reflex.

Why This Matters Spiritually? Friends, self-justification blocks growth. You can’t repent what you excuse. You can’t heal what you defend. You can’t mature beyond what you rationalise. God responds is humility, not explanation.

Way OutI. Self-Examination. II. Humble Yourself. The strongest are not those who defend themselves but those who can say. “I was wrong, and I’m ready to grow.”

Quote:  Self- Justification asks, “How do I look right?” Transformation asks, “How do I become right?”

Prophetic Decree: Receive the mind of Christ today and forevermore, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. Holy Ghost, open my eyes to areas of pride in me, in Jesus name.

2. Holy Ghost, break the grip of pride in me, in Jesus name.

3. Fire of deliverance, fall upon the spirit of pride in me, in Jesus name.

4. Altar of pride in my heart, catch fire, in Jesus name.

5. I substitute the spirit of pride for the spirit of humility, in Jesus name.

DON’T ALWAYS DEFEND YOURSELF

Growth demands honesty. And honesty is impossible when you are always in survival mode, always explaining, always protecting your image. When every correction feels like rejection, the heart closes instead of learning. But Scripture reminds us that the Lord disciplines those He loves...
