The concept of decorum is frequently used in formal settings like classrooms, online group chats, courtrooms, or diplomatic gatherings, where maintaining a certain level of respect and formality is essential.

Decorum is proper and polite behaviour. If you let out a big belch at a fancy dinner party, you’re not showing much decorum.

Here are several examples of decorum in different contexts:

1. Social Settings

i. Speaking politely and listening when others are talking.

ii. Dressing appropriately for the occasion (e.g., formal wear at a wedding).

iii. Avoiding interrupting conversations or using vulgar language in public.

2. Workplace

ii. Addressing co-workers, juniors, and superiors respectfully.

iii. Keeping personal issues or inappropriate jokes out of professional discussions.

3. School or Academic Environment:

i. Raising your hand before speaking in class.

ii. Respecting teachers and classmates.

iii. Submitting assignments on time and following rules.

4. Online or Digital Communication:

i. Using respectful language in emails or forums.

ii. Not bullying or posting messages that are forbidden by the group.

iii. Giving credit when using others’ work.

5. Formal Events or Ceremonies:

i. Standing during a national anthem.

ii. Refraining from using phones during a speech or performance.

iii. Applauding at appropriate moments.

QuoteA man who understands decorum is a great treasure and of great economical value.
