Bible Reading: Matthew 6: 9-13

Memory Verse:  Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) is able to accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power]. James 5:16 (AMP)

Shall we continue to draw inspiration from Matthew 6:9-13 and James 5:16. Conditions for effective prayers include:

5. Pray with Passion, Desperation and Fervency: If you want God to take you serious, take your prayers serious. Imagine two patients in a hospital. One says softly and gently, “Doctor, please treat me” but the other patient cries out desperately, “Doctor, I am dying”. Who do you think the doctor will first attend to? Passionately and fervently pour out your heart to God, expressing your needs and desires with intensity and focus. Passionate prayer is prayer offered with seriousness, focus, and spiritual vigour, producing powerful results.

6. Pray with Faith and Expectation: Pray with faith and conviction, believing that God is able to answer. Don’t pray with doubt; maintain a consistent faith throughout the prayer process. Charge up your faith with more light (revelation) from God’s Word. James 1:6-7 (NIV) says, “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.”

7. Pray with a Listening Ear: Develop a listening attitude to hear what God has to say to you during prayer. Be open to receiving guidance and direction from the Holy Spirit. While praying, it is important to be open to receiving understanding and revelation from God. This might involve pausing, reflecting, and listening for God’s voice or insights from your Spirit. Remember prayer is a two-way communication – God talking to man and man talking back to God.

8. Pray with Persistence (P.U.S.H):  P.U.S.H is an acronym for Pray Until Something Happens. Imagine if Daniel had left his prayer room before 21 days. Prayer is not for the faint-hearted. Don’t give up until you receive an answer. Don’t be discouraged by delays; maintain your faith and continue praying. Prayer is not a one-off activity but a sustained practice. Prayer is first a relationship (fellowship with the Father). It’s not a hit and run activity.

9. Pray with a Vision of the Expected Outcome: Have a vision of the outcome you desire when praying. Visualise the manifestation of your prayers, which can help strengthen your faith.

QuoteEffective prayer requires both a heartfelt and continuous approach – Lawrence Oyor
