Bible Reading: Colossians 1:26-27
Memory Verse: You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
Many pay attention to what is happening rather than what is going on. One of the greatest challenges in life and destiny is the temptation to focus only on what is happening i.e. the immediate, visible, noisy events around us while failing to discern what is really going on which is the deeper, spiritual, and long-term workings of God. We need the Holy Spirit to help us discern that we may see the big picture, only then can we come to our rest in God.
‘1. Biblical Examples of Surface vs. Big Picture:
A. Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 37–50)
What was happening: A young man betrayed by his brothers, sold as a slave, falsely accused, and thrown into prison.
What was going on: God was positioning him to become the Prime Minister of Egypt and the instrument to preserve nations from famine. Joseph himself later testified: “You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20).
B. Moses before Pharaoh (Exodus 5–14)
What was happening: An old fugitive confronting the mightiest king on earth, demanding release for slaves. It looked impossible, even laughable.
What was going on: God was displaying His power over the gods of Egypt, setting the stage for Israel’s deliverance, and announcing His supremacy to the nations (Exodus 9:16).
C. David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)
What was happening: A shepherd boy confronting a giant warrior with only a sling.
What was going on: God was using the confrontation to shift the destiny of Israel, to introduce David to the nation, and to begin the process of kingship.
D. The Cross of Jesus Christ (Luke 23, Colossians 2:14-15)
What was happening: A condemned man executed as a criminal, mocked, humiliated, and seemingly defeated.
What was going on: The greatest victory in history — sin cancelled, Satan disarmed, and humanity redeemed. The very thing that looked like tragedy was God’s strategy (1 Corinthians 2:8).
Quote: Many tragedies in life are God’s strategies.
Prophetic Decree: Receive divine insight to see what God is doing behind the scene in Jesus name.
