Bible Reading: Romans 12:2
Memory Verse: But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. Galatians 5:16 (AMP)
How Do You Manage Your Emotions?
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Don’t deny them, but don’t be ruled by them (Ephesians 4:26).
2. Name the emotion: Ask yourself, why am I feeling angry, jealous, fearful or insecured?
3. Seek Understanding: Proverbs 18:13 says, “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame”. Pause before reacting. Before acting on an emotion, pause for a few minutes to understand the root cause. Ask: Why am I feeling this way about the person/issue? David often prayed his emotions out before God. Psalm 42:5 says, “Why are you cast down, O my soul?”
4. Choose the Love Filter: Decide to interpret actions through love, not suspicion. Love conquers all.
5. Submit your emotions to the Holy Spirit: Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” When your emotions are surrendered to the Holy Spirit, they become a tool for discernment rather than distortion. The Holy Spirit can use your compassion to move you to action, your righteous anger to stand for justice, and your joy to strengthen you. Jesus himself modelled emotional balance. Jesus felt emotions – compassion (Matthew 9:36), anger at injustice (Mark 3:5), sorrow (John 11:35). But He never let His emotions distort truth. His emotions flowed from love and alignment with the Father’s will. At Lazarus’ tomb, He wept (emotion), yet He stillspoke with authority, “Lazarus, come out!” (truth). (John 11:35-44). This shows emotions can coexist with clarity and power when submitted to God.
6. Filter Your Emotions Through God’s Word: Paul gives us a prescription in Philippians 4:8, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure… think on these things.”. This means your mind must be renewed daily by the Scripture so that your ‘filters’ align with God’s perspective. Act from the truth of God’s Word and not from impulse.
7. Pray About Your Emotions: Having said all, commit to God in prayer. Should you notice that certain emotions such as depression or anger are predominant in your family line, then you better opt for deliverance.
N.B: Don’t be afraid of steady progress in your journey of emotional stability.
Quote: Emotions: E-motion! Quite unpredictable.
Prophetic Decree: Receive grace to discern the whispers of the Holy Spirit in every emotion, in Jesus name.
