Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Proverbs 17:22
Memory Verse: In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)
Thanksgiving is not a polite suggestion, it’s a spiritual law. Gratitude is heaven’s password. When you thank God, you open the door for more blessings. When you complain, you shut the door to the flow of grace. Thanksgiving is both a command and a key. Many believers think thanksgiving is optional i.e. something you do when life feels easy. But the truth is: you don’t thank God because everything is good, everything becomes good because you thank God.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO THANK GOD?
1. Thanksgiving keeps you aware of God’s presence: Psalm 100:4 says, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise.” When you start thanking God, you automatically move closer to His presence. God is attracted to gratitude but repelled by grumbling. Have you noticed how joyful people seem to always attract others? Likewise, God draws near to those who are grateful.
2. Thanksgiving turns little into much: John 6:11 says, “And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks, He distributed to the disciples…” Jesus thanked God for five loaves and two fish and it multiplied to feed five thousand people. Gratitude brings increase. There are people who earn little but live large because they are thankful. Others earn more but never have enough because they complain. Gratitude multiplies what you have. Complaining magnifies what you lack.
3. Thanksgiving sustains your miracle: In Luke 17:17–19, only one leper returned to thank Jesus, and he was made whole. The other nine were healed, but the thankful one was made whole (restored completely). Gratitude doesn’t just get you a miracle; it keeps you in the flow of God’s power. Some people receive blessings and forget the Giver, consequently, the blessings fade. The job you prayed for, the marriage, the healing, the opportunities can only be kept alive through thanksgiving.
4. Thanksgiving shifts your focus from problems to possibilities: Philippians 4:6 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Thanksgiving breaks the grip of anxiety. It reminds you that God is bigger than your problem.
5. Thanksgiving turns battles into victories: In 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 when Judah began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against their enemies. When you thank God in the middle of a battle, you provoke divine intervention. A couple in Ghana were told they’d never have children. Instead of living bitter, they began to praise God every morning, thanking Him for His promises. Two years later, they held twins in their arms. Thanksgiving is a weapon; it confuses the enemy.
6. Thanksgiving renews your joy and health: Unthankfulness drains energy; gratitude refuels it. Even medical research confirms that thankful people sleep better, stress less, and live longer. Gratitude literally heals (Proverbs 17:22).
Quote: You don’t thank God because everything is good. Everything becomes good because you thank God.
