Bible Reading: Ephesians 5: 21-33
Memory Verse: Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it. Psalm 127:1
One of the greatest challenges facing many Christian couples today is discovering that the marriage model they inherited does not always survive a change of environment.
Many couples relocate from one nation to another and suddenly begin experiencing conflicts they never had before. The problem is often not the relocation itself. The problem is the template upon which the marriage was built.
There are generally three marriage templates that operate in society:
1. Cultural Marriage
2. Contemporary Marriage.
3. Kingdom Marriage.
The question is: Which one are you building?
1. CULTURAL MARRIAGE: A cultural marriage is primarily built on traditions, customs, and societal expectations. Culture is not always wrong. Infact, many cultures promote honour, commitment, family values, and respect. However, culture becomes dangerous when it replaces God’s design.
In many cultures, the husband is viewed as the unquestionable authority while the wife is expected to be dependent and submissive regardless of circumstances.
The danger of cultural marriage is that roles are often based on tradition rather than biblical truth. Take for instance the marriage between Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. When Jacob desired Rachel, cultural practices in the land required that Leah be married first (Genesis 29). The cultural system dictated the process, regardless of personal preference or emotional consequences. While culture had its place, it produced years of conflict, rivalry, jealousy, and pain within the family. Culture alone could not produce harmony.
In modern times, a husband may come from a society where his financial power gives him unquestioned authority. As long as he earns significantly more than his wife, the system appears to work.
However, when they relocate and the wife begins earning the same income—or even more—the foundation begins to shake. Why? Because the marriage was built on economic superiority rather than mutual love and biblical partnership. The husband loses the source of control he depended upon and then the marriage enters crisis. A marriage built merely on culture often struggles when the environment changes.
Quote: A marriage built merely on culture often struggles when the environment changes.
Prophetic Decree: Let there be a reorientation that will shift your mind from cultural marriage to kingdom marriage, in Jesus name.
