Bible Reading: Proverbs 4:23
Memory Verse: So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 (TPT)
Emotional intelligence is not only for moments of crisis; it is for daily living. God desires that our emotions serve His purpose, not sabotage it. Let us explore how emotional awareness shapes other areas of our lives:
3. Unmanaged Emotions Can Sabotage Destiny: Many people lose relationships, opportunities, and spiritual credibility not because they were wrong, but because they responded wrongly.
Practical Example: A man is corrected by his pastor. Instead of listening, he allows pride and offence to take over. He leaves the church, not because God led him, but because his emotions did. Years later, he realizes he walked away from growth, not from abuse. Proverbs 29:11 says, “A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.”
4. Emotional Intelligence in Relationships: Love is not only spiritual; it is emotional discipline.
Marriage Example: When a spouse is tired and irritable, emotional intelligence says, “This is not the best time for an argument.” Wisdom chooses timing over winning.
Parenting Example: A child breaks something valuable. Emotion says, “Shout.” Intelligence says, “Correct without crushing.” Correction done in anger may release fear, not discipline.
5. Emotional Intelligence at Work and Career: Your competence may open doors, but your emotional intelligence keeps them open.
Practical Example: A skilled employee is repeatedly overlooked for promotion not due to lack of ability, but because they respond poorly to feedback and pressure. At other time, a skilled worker was denied promotion because she refused to honour her boss while other colleagues did.
Proverbs 16:32 says, “He who rules his spirit is better than one who takes a city.”
Practical Wisdom: Learn to receive correction without becoming defensive.
In conclusion, growing in Emotional Intelligence is developed, not inherited. Practical Steps to doing this include:
I. Pause before you speak (James 1:19).
II. Pray before you react.
III. Ask yourself: Why do I feel this way?
IV. Invite the Holy Spirit to govern your responses.
V. Learn from feedback, not offence.
Quote: Spiritual maturity is not measured by how loud you pray, but by how well you manage your emotions when tested.
Prophetic Decree: Let the healing balm from the throne of grace begin to soothe your emotions, in Jesus name
Prayer Focus
