Bible Reading: Isaiah 62: 4-5

Memory Verse: What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Mark 10:9 (KJV)

Marriage is indeed a journey. What to expect in the journey is hinged on several factor of which, God is the dominant factor. Whatever God does abides forever (Ecclesiastes 3:14). Expect many things along the way. Sincerely, you will need God. Marital wisdom (not just academic or intellectual wisdom), effective communication, emotional stability, financial prowess, etc, are other factors needed for a successful marriage. Don’t think you know all about your spouse before marriage. Time and chance reveals. Love shouldn’t be blind.

Pastor Bisi Adewale said, “Contrary to what many people think, a good marriage is not by luck, it does not come by chance or by favor, it is not something you get if you are fortunate to be blessed by God with a good spouse and a good marriage. In my counseling work, I have met a lot of men and women that claimed that their marriage is not okay because they were not fortunate to have a good partner or that they are not just lucky with marriage.”

If you think your marriage is a mistake and you ‘opt out’ instead of ‘working it out’, you may be surprised that your next marriage may end up a bigger disaster. There is no perfect marriage anywhere, beloved. Don’t allow Nollywood, Hollywood or Bollywood deceive you. They are simply acting a script for money. You work out your marriage daily till death do you part. Marriage is hard work.

Talking about effective communication, you must know what to talk with your spouse, when to talk, where to talk, and how to talk. Do you know sometimes, especially for the female folks, they may be saying a thing but meaning another thing. That’s the psychology of the female folks. You must be ready to read in-between the lines when your spouse talks. Don’t forget, communication could be verbal or non-verbal. Whao, behold the dynamics of marriage. Someone said, when your wife says, “Nothing is wrong”, know definitely that most likely, something is wrong. Emotional relationship goes beyond words, beloved.

Sometimes there are no right words to expressly communicate one’s intention per time. Learn to discern. Learn to understand what is being communicated beyond words and facial expressions. Two people living together for several years is not a sure guarantee that they know how to communicate and understand each other. They may simply be managing each other but not enjoying each other. Marriage is to be enjoyed and not managed. Ineffective communication is one major factor that causes such emotional disconnection.

Quote: You can be “talking ‘to’ your spouse” but not “talking ‘with’ your spouse”.
