Bible Reading: Luke 12:25, 1 Peter 5:7
Memory Verse: Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6 (NRSV)
Worry often creeps in when we focus on what we can’t control — our finances, health, or the future. But Jesus reminds us, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (Luke 12:25). Other ways to overcome the spirit of worry by the peace of God include:
5. Speak God’s Word Out Loud: Open your mouth and speak back to the spirit of worry that wants to capture your soul. Why? “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV). Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). When you declare God’s Word, you remind your spirit of His truth and silence the lies of fear. For example: When feeling anxious about her finances, Ruth declares aloud: “My God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
6. Live One Day at a Time: Jesus Himself commanded us not to be consumed with tomorrow’s troubles. For example: Emily constantly worries about whether she’ll find a spouse. But she decides to focus on serving God today, trusting that He holds her tomorrow. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34, NIV). Focus on being faithful in today’s responsibilities. Trust God to handle the future.
7.️ Surround Yourself with Faith-Building Community: God often strengthens us through others who speak encouragement and truth. For example: When Mark was diagnosed with a health issue, his small group prayed with him weekly, shared scripture, and helped him stay focused on God’s promises. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV).
8. Limit Exposure to Fear-Triggering Media: What you feed your mind affects your peace. You are ultimately a product of what you read, see, and hear. Feed your mind gate only with good news. For example: After realizing that too much news makes her anxious, Betty limits her media intake and instead listens to worship music and sermons that uplift her faith. “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2 (NIV).
9. Serve Others: Serving shifts the focus from our own problems to meeting others’ needs, releasing worry. For example: While unemployed, Fortune volunteers at a food bank. Helping others brings her joy and keeps her mind from constant worry. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2 (NIV).
10. Ask the Holy Spirit for Help: We’re not meant to overcome worry in our strength but by the Spirit’s power. For example: Each morning, Peter prays, “Holy Spirit, help me surrender my worries to You today. Teach me to trust.” “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things.” John 14:26 (NIV).
Quote: Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength – carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength -Corrie Ten Boom
