Bible reading: Exo.23:23-33
Memory Verse: “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” Romans 12:11(KJV).
Robert Boyle lived between 25th January, 1627 and 31st December, 1691. He was an Anglo-Irish natural philosopher, chemist, and inventor born in Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland.
Boyle is largely regarded today as the first modern Chemist, and therefore one of the founders of modern chemistry, and one of the pioneers of modern experimental scientific method. He is best known for Boyle’s law, which describes the inversely proportional relationship between the absolute pressure and volume of a gas, if the temperature is kept constant within a closed system.
Among his works, The Sceptical Chemist is seen as a cornerstone book in the field of chemistry. He was a devout and pious Anglican and is noted for his writings in theology. Boyle received private tutoring in Latin, Greek, and French when he was eight years old.
Though he was a scientist, he spent large sums promoting the spread of Christianity in the East, contributing liberally to missionary societies and the translating the Bible or portions of it into various languages. Boyle supported the policy that the Bible should be available in the vernacular language of the people.
In 1680—1685, Boyle personally financed the printing of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, in Irish. In his Will, Boyle provided money for a series of lectures to defend the Christian religion against those he considered “notorious infidels” – atheists, deists, pagans, Jews and Muslims.
