Bible ReadingJohn 15: 12-13

Memory Verse: We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters  1 John 3:16 (NLT)

The Bible identifies four main types of love, each with distinct characteristics:

1. Eros (Romantic Love): This is passionate love, often associated with physical attraction and sexual desire. While not explicitly condemned, the Bible emphasizes that romantic love should be expressed within the boundaries of marriage.

2. Philia (Brotherly Love): This is the love between friends, characterized by loyalty, trust, and mutual respect. It’s the kind of love that encourages and supports others.

3. Storge (Familial Love): This is the natural affection that exists between family members. It’s the love that binds families together and provides a sense of belonging.

4. Agape (Selfless / Sacrificial Love): This is the highest form of love, characterized by self-sacrifice and unconditional giving. It’s the love that God has for humanity and the love that Christians are called to emulate towards others.

Jesus, all powerful and completely perfect, gave up His life for us. He willingly went to the cross to be crucified, the most painful death imaginable, because He loved us so much. He invites us to do the same. 1 John 3:16 (NIV) tells us, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

How can we demonstrate this kind of sacrificial love in our own lives? Can we give our time, attention, or resources to help someone in need? Are we willing to listen and be present for others, even when it’s not easy or comfortable? Are we willing to even give up our lives to care for and protect others?

This kind of love is challenging. It asks us to look beyond our own needs and to see the needs of others. It calls us to be selfless, patient, and kind. The good news is, Jesus isn’t asking us to do anything for someone else that He wasn’t willing to do for us first. He knows how hard it is and yet, He still gave everything for us.

Today, let’s keep this scripture in mind and look for opportunities to show love through our actions. Whether it’s helping a neighbour, spending time with a friend who is struggling, or showing kindness to a stranger, each act of love brings us closer to living like Jesus.

Quote: True unconditional love is sacrificial – it is not easily offended, self-focused, or afraid of rejection. It seeks only the good of the other person — Charles F. Stanley.

Prophetic Decree: Any barrier between you and the Spirit of love is pulled down, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. Lord, I repent of my selfishness towards you and my neighbours, in Jesus name.

2. Holy Spirit, renew my mind to be like Jesus.

3. Love is patient. Holy Spirt, help me to be patient with my neighbours, in Jesus name.

4. Love easily forgives. Holy Spirit, help me to easily let go, and let God, in Jesus name.

5. Fresh impartation of the Spirit of love, overshadow me, in Jesus name.
