Bible Reading: Proverbs 24: 3-7
Memory Verse: By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established. Proverbs 24:3 (ESV)
Kunle Ologe rightly said: Most people prepare for a wedding day but few prepare for the skills required for a lifetime together. Marriage isn’t sustained by emotions. It’s sustained by skills. Love may bring two people together, but skills are what keep them connected when life gets difficult.
Here are 5 skills every single and married must learn if they want their relationship to thrive:
1. Communication: Many couples talk every day… but still feel unheard. Real communication is not just expressing yourself. It’s learning how to listen without becoming defensive, speak without attacking, and understand before reacting. Most marriage conflicts are not about the issue itself — they are about how the conversation is handled. Couples who learn healthy communication create clarity instead of confusion.
2. Conflict Resolution: Conflict is not the enemy of marriage. Unresolved conflict is. Every couple disagrees. But the difference between healthy and unhealthy marriages is how those disagreements are handled. Some couples escalate. Some withdraw. Some keep score. Healthy couples learn how to solve problems together instead of trying to win arguments.
3. Emotional Safety: A marriage cannot thrive where people feel judged, criticized, or emotionally unsafe. Emotional safety means your spouse can say:“This hurt me,” “I’m struggling,” “I need support,” — without fear of rejection or attack. When emotional safety exists, honesty increases and resentment decreases.
4. Financial Partnership: Money problems are rarely just about money. They are often about values, priorities, and expectations. Couples who thrive financially learn how to discuss money openly, plan together, respect different financial personalities, and build a shared vision for their future. Marriage works best when couples move from “my money vs your money” to “our money mission.”
5. Intimacy: Intimacy is more than physical connection. It includes emotional closeness, affection, friendship, and shared experiences. Without intentional effort, intimacy slowly fades under the pressure of responsibilities, children, and stress. Healthy couples learn how to protect and nurture their connection over time.
6. Prayer: There are forces beyond the physical that scatters marriage. Couples are encouraged to pray more on days when they have misunderstandings. Frustrate your disagreement by dragging it to the Cross. There are days you love your spouse with your will and not necessarily with your emotions. Your emotions will follow much later.
Quote: Love could bring two people together, but marriage can only be sustained by skills.
Prophetic Decree: I banish the spirit of ignorance and arrogance from your marital journey, in Jesus name.
Prayer Focus
1. I come against foundational powers that scatters marriage in my lineage by the power in the Blood of Jesus.
2. I receive wisdom to control my emotions and tone in Jesus name.
3. I receive power to control my emotions and will by the power of the Holy Spirit, in Jesus name.
4. Lord, help me to live out the fruit of the Spirit in my life, in Jesus name.
5. My home, come under the covering of the Blood of Jesus, in Jesus name.
