SKILLS vs. UNIVERSITY DEGREE

SKILLS vs. UNIVERSITY DEGREE

Bible Reading: Exodus 31: 2-5

Memory Verse:  If the axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success. Ecclesiastes 10:10 (NIV)

Disclaimer: The aim of today’s devotional is not to discourage you from pursuing a University degree if need be. The aim of today’s devotional is to open your eyes to recent changes in today’s world. Acquire a degree, and at the same time develop other skills God has endowed you. Permit me to quote a deep thinker: Whether you like it or not, the world is moving from degree-based education to a skills-based system.

To put it in layperson’s terms, companies are hiring for what you can offer and not your certificate only. Advances in Artifical Intelligence (AI) are such that many degrees are now obsolete. In Europe and the Americas, employers are not too mindful of your English language skills as long as you are proficient in programming languages like Python, Java, PHP, Ruby, Perl, HTML, etc.

Go to California, hundreds of thousands of Indians who can barely speak English earn millions as coders, programmers, AI technicians, and web developers. In some English speaking countries, your fluent English is not the first point of consideration as long as you have nursing skills, they will give you Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)!

With your PhD in political science, what a Canada-based laboratory technician earns in one hour is what you make in one month. Why? Because we now live in a world where skill will kill poverty faster than a degree!

Banks thought they were indispensable until crypto came. Hotels felt they were irreplaceable until Airbnb came. Taxis thought they were without equal until Uber arrived. Aerial photographers and cameramen believed they had job security until drones were invented. Even drivers are being replaced with driverless cars. Learn from them. Don’t let your degree get into your head. Skills are replacing graduate courses. Stay humble. Anyone and anything can be replaced except God!

QuoteGo to the University if need be, however, acquire relevant skills alongside.

Prophetic Decree: May your career path be flooded with light, in Jesus name.

Prayer Focus

1. My Father, please show me the project of my prosperity, in Jesus name.

2. Holy Spirit,  reveal to me what you will have me do with my life in the days of my youth, in Jesus name.

3. Let the jealousy of God magnetise men and resources who will mentor and guide me into fortune, in Jesus name.

4. I receive grace to follow hard after relevant knowledge that will make my destiny count, in Jesus name.

5. If I am on the wrong path of career, O Lord, mercifully bring me back on track, in Jesus name.

Many pay attention to what is happening rather than what is going on. One of the greatest challenges in life and destiny is the temptation to focus only on what is happening i.e. the immediate, visible, noisy events around us while failing to discern what is really going on...
