Bible Reading: Psalm 127: 3-5

Memory VerseStart children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

Shall we consider the story behind the hymn, “I’d Rather Have Jesus”. This is a song written by Rhea F. Miller with the tune written by George Beverly Shea. This poem, penned in 1922, was left on a piano in the Shea home by Bev Shea who wanted her son to find it and change the trajectory of his life. The lyrics, “I’d rather have Jesus”, inspired George so much and conveyed to him about his own goals and ambitions in life.

He sat at the piano and began singing them with a tune that seemed to fit the words. Shea’s mother heard him singing and requested him to sing it at church. George’s life direction did change. He was presented a popular music career with NBC, but years later chose to work with evangelist Billy Graham and sang this hymn around the world.

One way to influence others is starting a conversation on a common ground. Child training in the 21st century if not strategic may not offer any significant change. Mother Beverly Shea knew his son George was a music enthusiast so, she partnered with the Holy Spirit to pen down the type of life she would want her son to live in God, placed it beside his piano, and again, left the Holy Spirit to do the work of conviction. What a brilliant and refined approach to making impact.

All Parents must know that without the convicting power of the Holy Spirit their best efforts will end up in frustration. Have you been having series of troubles over the attitude  of your children? While there is a great place for discipline, corporal punishment MAY NOT always be the solution. Look into the areas of his/her likes, and let the Holy Spirit give you a strategy to connect to him/her via that means. Try your best not to lose your children to the ever awaiting wolves of this world.

Quote:

1. Train up a child in the way he should go but make sure you go that way yourself – Charles Spurgeon.

2. The goal of parenting isn’t to create perfect kids. It’s to point our kids to the perfect God – Lindsey Bell.

3. Your greatest contribution to the kingdom of God may not be something you do, but someone you raise – Andy Stanley.

4. The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home – Harold B. Lee.

5. A child is going to remember who was there, not what was spent on them. Kids outgrow a toy and outfits, but they never outgrow time and love – Proud Happy Mama

6. Far too many parents are more interested in their kids making the team than making the kingdom – Dr. Tony Evans.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Exodus 16-18

HYMN:  I’D RATHER HAVE JESUS THAN SILVER OR GOLD

1. I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;

I’d rather be His than have riches untold;

I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands.

I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand

Chorus:

Than to be the king of a vast domain

Or be held in sin’s dread sway.

I’d rather have Jesus than anything

This world affords today.

2. I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;

I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;

I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame.

I’d rather be true to His holy name.

 [Chorus]

3. He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;

He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;

He’s all that my hungering spirit needs.

I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead
