Bible Reading: Philippians 4:6-7
Memory Verse: Do not worry about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7 (NRSV)
Worry is one of the most common struggles we face daily. Whether it’s finances, family, health, or the future, our hearts often become heavy. But as believers, God has not left us defenseless against worry. He offers us His peace, a peace that transcends our circumstances.
Let’s look at how we can overcome worry with practical steps, supported by God’s Word.
1. Recognise the Source of Worry: Often, worry stems from focusing too much on what we cannot control. For example: Sarah has a job interview next week. She constantly thinks, “What if I fail? What if they don’t like me?” The more she worries, the more anxious she feels. “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” (Luke 12:25, NIV). Worry doesn’t change outcomes; it only steals our peace. Acknowledge that some things are beyond your control, but nothing is beyond God’s control.
2. Replace Worry with Prayer: Worry is like a fire that grows when fed. Prayer extinguishes that fire by shifting our focus to God’s ability rather than our inability. For example: John worries about paying his bills. Instead of panicking, he brings his needs before God, trusting Him to provide. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NIV). Whenever a worry arises, immediately turn it into a prayer. Make a habit of telling God everything that is troubling you.
3. Practice Gratitude: Gratitude redirects our hearts from fear to faith, reminding us of God’s past faithfulness. For example: Lisa keeps a journal where she writes down ways God has provided for her in the past. This helps her remember that God is trustworthy. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV). Start and end each day listing things you are thankful for. This discipline shifts your perspective from worry to worship.
4. Trust God’s Promises: Worry fades when we meditate on God’s promises. For example: David struggles with fear about his children’s future. He clings to Proverbs 22:6, reminding himself that as he trains them in God’s way, God will guide their path. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, NIV). Memorise and meditate on God’s promises daily. Let His Word anchor your soul.
